Round 14, Sunday, October 18th
With just three rounds remaining in the Formula One World Championship, the Canon Williams Honda team travelled away from Europe and on to Mexico safe in the knowledge that they had won the Constructor' title and with Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell first and second in the Drivers' Championship. Mansell had had trouble in Mexico the year before when he muffed the start, while Piquet held the lap record for the circuit at 125 mph. But the team was likely to face considerable opposition from the improving Ferraris driven by Gerhard Berger and Michele AIboreto and the Benettons driven by Thierry Boutsen and Teo Fabi. The scene was set for another classic confrontation in the heat and dust of a circuit whose condition had deteriorated badly in the last 12 months. The cameramen reveal just what it takes to heave the powerful turbo-charged cars around the Mexican circuit, capturing in perfect detail the many tactical moves and heart-stopping moments as desperation crept in for championship points with only the Japan and Australian races left. Piquet on 70 points, Mansell 52, Ayrton Senna 51 and Prost 46 tell the full story. With only 11 of the 16 races to count, the situation was a long way from settled and this superb video takes the story one step nearer.
Severe bumps and varying surface grip were just two problems which, in the race, led to some of the most eventful Grand Prix races seen for a long time!
