Introduction

Description

Hungarian GP, Round 9 Hungaroring, Sunday, August 9th

Brazilians Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna headed for the Hungarian Grand Prix leading the World Championship and with the need to resolve their plans for 1988 becoming more and more urgent. A good result here would augur well in contract negotiations. Piquet had won at Hockenheim two weeks earlier but had since announced he was leaving Williams for Lotus. Senna was four points behind his countryman and had revealed he was leaving Lotus - but not to where.

The first Grand Prix on the slow Hungaroring saw these two drivers fight an epic duel and with the major announcements of team moves they were anxious to assert supremacy behind the Iron Curtain. Piquet's team-mate Nigel Mansell had slipped to third in the table but had only been forced out of the lead through mechanical failure in Germany. He too was keen to acquire nine more points to try to avenge his 1986 defeat.

The cameras capture the action on this attractive circuit, with plenty of chance to see the top teams striving to gain any small advantage. At the half-way point of the championship, it's fascinating stuff.
