Both Ayrton Senna and World champion Alain Prost had two wins apiece, as did fast climbing Nigel Mansell. The other round had been taken by Mansell's Williams-Honda team-mate Nelson Piquet at the opening round in Brazil. The scene was set for some dramatic action in Round 8, and the cameramen were ready in the very best possible positions to portray the battle on the revised Le Castellet circuit on the Cote d'Azur.
