Description

Round 13, Jerez, Sunday, September 27th

With just four races to go in the World Championship, the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez was obviously going to be crucial to many teams and drivers. Reigning champion Alain Prost had put the wind up everyone taking the under-powered McLaren-TAG to victory the week before at the twelfth round in Portugal after Ferrari's Gerhard Berger had cracked under the strain of leading with only a few laps to go Nelson Piquet (Canon Williams Honda) still led the drivers championship with 67 points but could only count 11 of the 16 races if it came to a fight to the finish. His no-scores in San Marino and Belgium would reduce that to 11 to count out of l4 so he was well placed as he headed for the relatively slow Jerez circuit. Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell had been out of luck at Estoril, so remained second and third respectively, the Camel Lotus Honda splitting the Canon Williams Hondas. Prost lay fourth on 40 points with Stefan Johannson and Gerhard Berger a long way back. This video shows to the fullest and very best extent what was to prove one of the most entertaining grands prix of the season. Really close racing throughout most of the leading positions, and drama right to the end. With the Benettons and Ferraris continuing to improve, who would bet against them causing the second successive race surprise? what about the Williams' active suspension as used by Piquet? And Mansell at Estoril? Would they use it to advantage on the twists and turns of Jerez?
