Introduction

Description

Round 3, Sunday, May 17th

The championship was really boiling up as the cars and drivers moved to Spa for the third round, with the picturesque forest track expected to provide its usual thrilling action. Britain's Nigel Mansell had won the previous round at Imola and led the drivers table. Canon Williams Honda team-mate Nelson Piquet had recovered from his San Marino practice crash and was apparently none-the-worse.

But there would be severe opposition from Marlboro McLaren's Alain Prost and Stefan Johansson and the Ferraris were getting better all the time under the guidance of John Barnard. Then there were the Brabhams, the Benettons...

But as this video shows, not all the pundits' predictions always fall fully into place. In the initial start, Mansell got away from pole position in fine style, only to lose that advantage on a re-start after the race was halted following a severe collision between Phillippe Strieff and Jonathon Palmer. The fabulous camera-work as the field exit Eau Rouge, with the cars on the outer limits of adhesion and with drivers straining to maintain control, the spectacular view from Nakajima's Lotus camera-car during the race, the searing acceleration out of La Source hairpin. All this and much more as the Belgian Grand Prix unfolds.
