Mindful of the intense disappointment of twice previously having seen the World Championship slip away in the closing stages, Frenchman Alain Prost settled for third place in mischievous weather conditions which beset the postponed Belgian GP at Francorchamps. Keeping firmly out of trouble, Prost brought home the McLaren for points which placed him very advantageously in his quest for the crown. The weather was unpredictable but Brazilian Ayrton Senna mastered it all. Nigel Mansell raced wheel-to-wheel with team-mate Keke Rosberg which in the end turned out favourably towards Mansell. But sneaking towards the title was that man Prost.
