Adelaide, Sunday,November 3,1985 The Word Championship could not have closed in more dramatic fashion than that of the final race on the new street circuit in the hot Spring sunshine of Adelaide. As viewers of this video will see, the pace was electrifying with Lotus, Brabham McLaren and Williams giving it all they had, but for once pleasantly being joined by the Tyrrells. Britain’s Nigel Mansell was looking for a hat-trick of wins but was muscled out early on by the forceful Ayrton Senna, who then proceeded to use every inch of track and a considerable proportion of his surroundings too! Mansell's Williams team-mate Keke Rosberg survived intense pressure from Senna but was eventually obliged to visit the pits after the Lotus rammed the leader's car. Niki Lauda was also pressing hard when he unaccountably crashed. It was an incident-packed thriller and a fitting climax to wind up the 1985 season which saw Frenchman Alain Prost as its title winner. Few 1985 races were more exciting than the Australian. |
