The outcome of each of the 1984 Championship rounds had so far been unpredictable. Alain Prost and Niki Lauda had made good use of their McLaren's turbo-charged V6 TAG-Porsche engines. But Piquet in the Brabham-BMW, Rosberg in the Williams-Honda and Warwick and Tambay in the Renaults all showed a higher outright performance capability during the '84 practice sessions. That's not forgetting the might of Ferrari and their talented pairing of Arnoux and Alboreto - the former driving in front of a home crowd.
