The renewed battle between Jaguar and Mercedes in World Sportscar championship racing continued with a vengeance at Monza, the home of Italian motor racing. The Silk Cut Jaguar team fielded two cars, with Martin Brundle, Eddie Cheever, Johnny Dumfries and Jan Lammers at the wheel. But it was the Sauber Mercedes team which, had won at Jerez and Jochen Mass, Jean-Louis Schlesser and Mauro Baldi would provide formidable opposition. Then there were the private Porsches in the hands of a wealth of talented drivers running in the Joest, Brun and Kren teams out to reassert themselves.
This video captures the very best of the action at the famous Autodrome, with the craft of the drivers tested to the full on the Parabolica and through the Lesmos, whilst the engines are pushed to the red line down Monza's straights where power was required in plenty.
With Jaguar and Mercedes each having won one apiece of the two preceding rounds, Monza would provide plenty of drama and the chance to see who would make the running in round three.
