This was an extraordinary race. For years, the Mazdas have impressed with their reliability but surely no one would have ever expected one to win! The Jaguars were more reliable than ever, finishing 2nd 3rd and 4th but unable to complete strongly because of their fuel limitations. The fastest cars, though, were the Mercedes, running in 1-2-3 positions for quite a while. But the unbelievable happened and Japan had its first ever victory in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race and once again a British driver, Johnny Herbert, was in the winning car.
