David Coulthard may have swapped life behind the wheel of a Formula One car for life behind the microphone on BBC’s F1 coverage, but he is still fondly remembered as one of Britain’s most successful, and popular Grand Prix stars.
He burst onto the scene in 1994, taking his first win the following year and going on to notch up 13 GP victories in a career which saw him drive for Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.
Despite never claiming the World Championship, Coulthard scored the highest number of points of any British driver, establishing himself as one of the greatest F1 stars.
When he departed McLaren at the end of the 2004 season for Red Bull, many observers claimed it was the end of the Scot’s career. However, the move saw Coulthard rejuvenated, his experience and talent helping the new team become established in the sport.
He remained competitive right through to the end of his career, claiming a podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix in his final season.
