Classic Commercials in Colour Book - Description
The object of this book is to take the reader on a photographic trip down Memory Lane to look at working commercial vehicles covering approximately the 20-year period from 1963 to the early 1980s, although most of the content dates from the early 1960s.
The writer grew up in the late 1940s/early 1950s in Nottingham, in an area close to the Forest Recreation Ground, a large open area where the mammoth Goose Fair is held annually in October, and where many of these illustrations were taken.
It should also be stressed that the vehicles were not posed, but photographed ‘as found’; at work, parked up at night, or, in some instances, in scrapyards.
Sometimes the camera had to be pointed at the subject and the shutter quickly released to avoid missing a particular, possibly forever.
As far as is known, at the time the photographs were taken all the vehicles illustrated within the book were working vehicles, none being in preservation. Sometimes dented and scraped, sometimes rusty and grimy and with faded paintwork, they nonetheless had a dignified and workmanlike quality.
