Porsche Racing Milestones Book - Description

For over fifty years at race courses around the world, competition models from a small German car maker have made their mark on the racing scene and in the record books. From the first modified 356 coupes with 50 hp at Le Mans to the awesome 1200 hp 917 and the all-conquering 962 models, the men at Porsche have built racers that were tough, fast and technically advanced.

In August 1998, on the occasion of Porsche's 50th anniverary as a car manufacturer, the machines and the men who made them famous gathered at Laguna Seca racetrack in Monterey, California. Two weeks of preparation and practice culminated in a weekend that saw perhaps the largest gathering of racing Porsches in one place ever. The Monterey Historic Races honoured Porsche as its Featured Marque and thousands of spectators relived raicng history as Speedsters, Spyders and scores of other Porsches took to the track.

It was perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime event, and author and photographer Hal Thomas has captured all the colour and excitement of this monumental gathering. With over 200 colour images he gives you a prime trackside seat and takes you into the paddock and under the hood of the most famous race cars from Zuffenhausen. Dozens more unique colour archive photos are seen for the first time, along with black and white images from the earliest days of Porsche racing.

Hal's comprehensive text tells the story of these exciting machines in Europe and America and the men who designed, built and raced them. Hardback Book. 224 pages.
