Introduction

Description

Foreword by Stirling Moss

This book offers a panorama of Grand Prix motor racing from the pioneering road races during the last years of the 19th century to the highly sophisticated and lavishly promoted events of today. It takes you through the Edwardian years, the bleak Twenties, the German domination of the Thirties and on to the early post war years of Italian supremacy and the gradual rise of the British Racing Green.

Later chapters cover the years of domination by cars powered by the brilliant Ford DFV engine produced by Britain’s Cosworth Engineering, the spectacular turbocharged era of the Eighties and on to the current 3-litre formula and its Williams, Ferrari and McLaren-Mercedes pacesetters.

Divided into 10 sections, the book traces the developing racing history in a highly readable manner, the main manuscript being supplemented by a wide selection of extracts and articles of classic journalism from the period in question.

The book is illustrated throughout by exceptional black and white and colour pictures featuring the most significant cars, drivers and events; they provide a fascinating overview of the development of the racing car and its environment through a century of Grand Prix motor racing. This, therefore, is a book for browsing through time and time again as well as offering an absorbing cover-to-cover read.

Hardback. 272 pages.
