Introduction

Description

Micahel Schumacher finally won the drivers' World Championship for Ferrari, and his third title, after five years of trying, and became the first driver of the famous marque to do so since Jody Scheckter in 1979.

Once again, as the season unfolded it became clear that the battle would be between the Prancing Horse and McLaren-Mercedes, the title swinging one way and then the other.

After a dream start to the year, with three wins of out three in Australia, Brazil and San Marino, Ferrari's title aspirations took a blow when David Coulthard launched his championship bid with a victory at the British Grand Prix, and followed it with two more in Monaco and France. During this time defending champion Mika Hakkinen had scraped just a single win in nine races but he went to Austria refreshed and proceeded to dominate the race. He won again in Hungary and Belgium, overtaking Schumacher's Ferrari in a daring move towards the end of an epic race at Spa, and began to extend his lead in the points. The Finn and McLaren looked to be gaining unstoppable momentum, but Michael Schumacher and Ferrari came back fighting with an emotional victory at Monza.

The F1 show then moved on to the United States, returning for the first time in nine years and saw Michael Schumacher put on a masterful display to win at Indianapolis in difficult conditions. In Japan, Schumacher drove to another fine victory and sealed the drivers' championship, but it was at the last race of the season in Malaysia that Ferrari claimed the constructors' title for the second successive year.

The tension and excitement, speed and glamour of a season of grand prix racing are chronicled in the 50th Anniversary edition of AUTOCOURSE, long established as the world's grand prix annual. With superb illustrations contributed by Paul-Henri Cahier, and many more of the sport's top photographers, and the incisive, authoritative coverage of the 2000 season by leading F1 journalist Alan Henry and his team of contributors, AUTOCOURSE is an unrivalled record of the motor racing year that no enthusiast should be without.
