Introduction
Description
George Barris was not only a master customiser, but also an accomplished photographer.
Barris Kustom Techniques of the '50s Volume One gives the reader 128 pages of cars built (mostly) by George and Sam Barris, and photographed by George.
Many of the photos were taken in the Barris shop and show brother Sam working a stick of lead or adding extended quarter panels to his personal 1950 Buick. The first chapter is really a short history of the Barris shop, including the time he spent in Harry Westergard's shop and how he persuaded his brother to join him in the business when he was discharged from the military.
Much of the book is made up of feature photos drawn from the work George did for the magazines of the period. These cars include much of their best-known work, like the Hirohata Merc and the Metranga coupe complete with construction notes.
Barris Techniques of the '50s Volume One is a little like waking into the Barris shop on Atlantic Boulevard in Lynwood, California, to meet the talented Barris brothers and look over their wonderful creations.
