The 500 cc class of 1989 saw three men threatening to make the championship a private battle. Wayne Rainey (Yamaha) led the series but Eddie Lawson (Honda) was hot on his heels and Kevin Schwantz (Suzuki) was again right on the pace at Rijeka. Kevin Magee, Randy Mamola and Niall Mackenzie were in the hunt for points too. Sito Pons (Honda) was THE top man in 250 racing in 1989, but the Yamahas of Cadalora, Garriga and Ruggia were back on the pace. The Yugoslavian GP always provides close racing and every one of the significant manoeuvres (on and off the track!) have been captured in these memorable races.
