Round 7 of the ‘89 Championships and Wayne Rainey (Yamaha) wanted to add to his GP victories but Eddie Lawson (Honda) and Suzuki teamsters Kevin Schwantz and Ron Haslam were very much on the pace. Sito Pons was threatening to run away with the 1989 250cc championship. At the Salzburgring however, Jacques Cornu, Helmut Bradl and Carlos Cardus were out to thwart the Spaniard's progress. Steve Webster and Tony Hewitt were looking to gain their 3rd victory in the sidecar class, but Biland and Waltisperg were out to stop them.
