With his first win since the 1985 opening round in South Africa, Californian World Champion Eddie Lawson closed the championship points gap by taking his Marlboro Yamaha to victory over rival Freddie Spencer (Rothmans Honda) in the sixth round at Rijeka. A courageous ride by Australian Wayne Gardner yielded another fine placing. And Frenchman Christian Sarron and Raymond Roche showed there's no love lost between them as they forced their Yamahas round the curves at frightening pace and on the very extremes of adhesion.
