The final showdown of the thrilling 1983 500cc Grand Prix season with Freddie Spencer and Kenny Roberts. After a season-long duel between the two superstars Spencer led Roberts by just two points! Sweden saw Spencer outmanoeuvre Roberts to snatch victory by a wheel! At Silverstone Roberts Yamaha gave him the edge over the Honda rider.
So at Imola Roberts had to finish at least two places ahead of Spencer. Yamaha hoped that Eddie Lawson could put himself between their man and Spencer. But Freddie had other ideas.
